this was actually supposed to be a practical class project: an exploration of food photography with the intent of creating saleable images and developing my commercial technique ...
(it seems i got a little bit side-tracked ...)
in researching my topic, i came across several artists who were using food in a unique way - specifically Carl Warner and Liz Hickok - creating detailed, edible landscapes, and i was entranced. immediately i thought of all the fun i could have building my own landscapes out of candy: the vibrant colours and glittering sugar were irresistible!
2 of my favourite devices in photography are macro and short depth-of-field. in the case of landscapes made out of candy, getting nice and close to the objects in the scene gives them extra presence in the image and allows the viewer to explore usually minute objects in a unique way. Shallow depth-of-field adds greatly to the mystique and surreality of the scene. the colours are vibrant and fun, and it's a wonderful process to build my scene up from scratch (with the required taste-tests whenever necessary, of course) and then explore it with my camera.
this is still very much a work in progress, and i certainly intend to continue working on this series in the future.
